James (Jim) Joyce worked the Pacific Coast League where he started his umpiring career in the eighties after giving up on literature. I used to watch his games before going home in the evening to read his Finnegans Wake, which I never really understood.
Last night he mistakenly, tragically took a perfect game out of the pocket of a Tiger pitcher.
He clearly should have stuck to writing.
This is a picture of Jim in his umpiring cap. Maybe he needs to buy new glasses! Da bum!
See the sad event here.
James Joyce was going blind even as he worked for 17 years on his last book. No wonder he missed the call.
